People are initially drawn to Gucci clothing due to its frequent use of bright colour. However, is this its most significant feature? For me, though I respect the colour in Gucci clothing, I respect the brand and fashion house more-so for its fine cuts, professional tailoring, immaculate designs and bold decorations. This is an idea which I am going to explore through the use of my photography. Yesterday afternoon, Alessandro Michele showcased his Cruise 2017 collection for the brand in the cloisters of London’s Westminster Abbey.
Michele spoke of how “England is like a box full of treasures. It’s something I’ve loved all my life. I love how the contemporary sits with the past. It’s all about the hidden details. Or the punk having a cup of tea.” The collection itself was very much intertwined with English heritage and culture; there were nods to the Union Jack, British punk, the Queen’s headscarf, Victorians, and tartan patterning, to name a few. Michele’s collection may be ‘a beautiful chaos’, as he referenced, but it certainly worked. The Gucci Cruise 2017 collection intertwined the English and Italian aesthetics; a harmonic combination of two renowned cultures.
I travelled to Westminster Abbey to photograph guests arriving to the show, and in particular to discover what Gucci pieces they were styling. Most guests were head-to-toe in Gucci, honouring Michele’s most recent available creations. I loved being able to capture the guests’ arrivals through photography, and re-visit my experiences from London Fashion Week in February. As mentioned, I respect Gucci as a high fashion brand due to its bold decorations and often alternative designs. When editing my photographs today, I decided to present them in black and white format, as I believe that this way, one can truly appreciate both the art of the photograph and the art of the clothing designs.
Let us therefore appreciate the nature of Gucci clothing in several of my monochrome photographs below. I hope you enjoy looking at them, and please do let me know your opinions of them in the comments box below!
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
